A series of workshops are available to job seekers looking to better prepare themselves for their job search.
Interviewing Techniques Workshop | June 15, 2010 | Noon - 1:00pm
Receive tips and techniques for effective interviewing. From researching the employer to how to follow up after the interview, we will cover all the important issues. We will identify the questions to expect and discuss ways to answer them. Mock interviews will be part of this workshop.
Career Assessment Workshop | June 29, 2010 | 5:00 - 6:00pm
Find out about who you are, your interests, skills and values, the work environments that are in sync with your natural skills and abilities. Investigate your employment and educational opportunities. Design a plan that enables you to obtain your career/job goals.
Resume Writing Workshop | July 6, 2010 | Noon - 1:00pm
This workshop will give you resume writing tips and examples of different resume styles. Also presented will be the best formats to use and reviews of individual resumes.
All workshops are FREE and open to the public. They will be held in the Career Center, Room MA1152, in the Main Building on the campus of GateWay Community College, which is located at 40th Street and Washington in Phoenix. GateWay is a stop on the METRO Light Rail system.

GateWay Community College's Apprenticeship Coordinator, Anna Lopez, was selected as one of 21 leaders serving at a community college to participate in the National Community College Hispanic Council (NCCHC) Leadership Fellows Program starting this June.
The NCCHC Leadership Fellows Program is geared toward preparing highly qualified Hispanic leaders and assisting them in achieving higher level positions within the community colleges. The year long program consists of various seminars that provide training in crucial areas such as crisis management, institutional effectiveness, community development, technology, culture and diversity, strategic planning, and much more.
"This program offers training that you can't really get in the classroom," Lopez said. "At these seminars, I will have the opportunity to learn firsthand input on actual experiences from deans and vice presidents nationwide."
Participants will also benefit from mentoring, assistance building a professional career plan, and the opportunity to build a network of colleagues from across the country. "I want to see the similarities and differences throughout the US the strengths and challenges that are presented and how they are dealt with," Lopez said.
Anna Lopez has been with GWCC for almost two years. She previously served as the Director of Custom Training and Education at Phoenix College for six years and began with the community colleges as an adjunct Spanish faculty at Phoenix College and Paradise Valley Community College for over four years.
GateWay Community College offers School Nurse Certification courses for Registered Nurses wishing to sit for the School Nurse Certification Exam offered by the Arizona State Board of Nursing. There are five courses designed to provide the knowledge and skills need to prepare for the exam. The first course begins June 21.
The following courses are recommended for School Nurses and Health Assistants wishing to work in an educational setting:

Fundamentals of School Nursing Practice | August 23 - December 6
Nursing Care of the Special Needs Child | August 26 - December 2

Healthcare Management for School Nurses | August 30 - December 3
Community Health Nursing Principles for School Nurses | Fall
Additional Continuing Education Courses are available for School Nurses and Health Assistants including School Health Assisting, School Nurse Emergency Assessment Skills, Ventilator Management for Nurses, LPN-Venipuncture, Interpretation of Cardiac Arrhythmias, Nursing Update: Stoma Care, and Nursing Update: Wound and Skin Care.

Tryouts for the 2010-2011 GateWay Community College (GWCC) Men's Baseball Team are being held at 9:00am on Thursday, June 10 on field 3 of Gene Autry Park. Gene Autry Park is the Gecko's home field and is located at 4125 East McKellips Road in Mesa. Each player must provide their own workout clothes, baseball spikes, and glove. GWCC will provide Baum bats, baseballs and other equipment needed for use during the tryout.
All participants should arrive 30 minutes early to register and warm-up. While walk-ups registration is available, pre-registration is encouraged. Each participant must complete an Assumption of Risk Form and a Tryout Liability Waiver Form prior to participation. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent signature. The forms must be on hand and signed to be eligible to participate.There is a $5 field usage fee for those wishing to tryout.
The 2010 Gecko Baseball team was the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region I, Division II Champions. Head Coach, Rob Shabansky earned the 2010 NJCAA Region I Coach of the Year award. Player's Casey Maloney and Josh Melendez were named to the 2010 NJCAA Region I Division 2 First Team and Alex Murrieta was named to the Second Team. Josh Melendez and Doug Snover were named to the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference All-Conference First Team as Catcher and Outfielder, respectively.
