GateWay CC Student Awarded International Women's Day Scholarship
Phoenix Women's Commission helps GateWay nursing student achieve dream of college education
GateWay Community College student Marcia Crayton has a lot on her plate, including pursuing a nursing degree while being a mom and working to support her family. Because of her hard work and dedication to every area of her life, the Phoenix Women’s Commission has awarded Crayton the 2009 International Women's Day Scholarship for Re-entry Women, an honor that will help Crayton financially as she works toward finishing her degree.
Every year the Phoenix Women’s Commission celebrates International Women's Day by hosting a luncheon and awarding scholarships to deserving women who return to school while still juggling family and financial responsibilities. This year’s luncheon will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, March 4 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Crayton and this year’s other scholarship winners will be honored at the event.
“Receiving this scholarship has helped me to use the time I would be at work to instead be at home doing things like helping my kids with their homework,” Crayton said. “I will be the first in my family to earn a college degree and this shows my children that if I can be successful at this age then they can be successful as well.”
With the help of this scholarship, Crayton plans on finishing her associate’s degree, then going into the workforce for a year to pay off loans and bills. She then plans on pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Grand Canyon University or ASU.
