Campus Construction Update

Construction of the new student parking lot on the northwest corner of campus at 38th Street and Van Buren is now complete. Students can begin parking there on January 25.

From now until mid 2012, sections of GateWay's campus will be under construction. There will be tremendous growth with the completion of the northwest parking lot, GateWay Emerging Technologies Incubator and an Integrated Education Building; all designed to serve GateWay's students and the community better. During this time, please be patient with the changes and for your safety and the safety of others, please do not go into any fenced areas and please use extra caution when near all construction areas. Large trucks will be coming and going so as you turn onto GateWay Drive (38th Street); please watch for the trucks and pedestrians.

Northwest end of Campus Construction
Also on the northwest side of campus, construction of the GateWay Emerging Technologies Incubator has also begun. The Incubator will feature rentable research space to house early-stage start-up companies and provide the resources to produce successful entry into the business community, creating jobs and strengthening the local economy.

The nearly 17,000 square foot space will accommodate both wet and dry research labs to attract businesses focusing on emerging technologies, including bioscience. Additionally, businesses that align with the career-training programs offered at the college have the opportunity for potential partnerships with faculty and academic programs, providing a place for students to experience hands-on learning through internships.

In addition to providing space to house companies, a full array of small business start-up services will be available to tenants including business and technical support, guidance and mentoring and exposure to a connected network of outside business resources and professionals. Basic administrative tools will also be available to tenants. Construction of the Incubator is expected to be complete by September of 2011.

Applications are now being accepted for businesses looking for a place to begin operations with the intent to grow and become a positive impact in the economic development of the Phoenix area. For more information about the Incubator and for an application, please contact Susie Pulido, Director of Institutional Advancement and Entrepreneurial Development at (602) 286-8224 or pulido@gatewaycc.edu.

Southwest end of Campus
The entrance to the Automotive Building is being relocated to the south end and the small area just east of automotive will be repurposed for the automotive program as well. In preparation for this construction, the tables and benches have been removed. At this point there are no plans to relocate this area on campus. Beginning Monday, December 20, 2010, the parking area just south of automotive will be fenced off. With so much construction taking place between the Main Building, which is the middle building and the South Building, which is just off Washington Street it is recommended that you plan to take a different route going between these buildings.

West end of campus
Preliminary infrastructure work is beginning for the Integrated Education Building (IEB), which will be located where the employee parking lot is just west of the outside amphitheater and will extend all the way to GateWay Drive. The IEB will house the functions for student services, a library, computer commons and more instructional space.  The 120,000 square foot facility will feature science labs, classrooms, indoor and outdoor art studios, a public library, learning center, computer area, Counseling, Disability Support Services, Career Services, faculty and staff offices and all Enrollment Services. Groundbreaking for the IEB is slated for March 2011 with a projected completion date of July 2012.

These are very exciting times for GateWay, so as you see more construction activity on campus, know that these changes are being made to better serve our students and the surrounding community. If you have any questions regarding campus construction, please contact Janet Langley, Vice President of Administrative Services at (602) 286-8017 or Susie Pulido, Director of Institutional Advancement and Entrepreneurial Development at (602) 286-8224 or pulido@gatewaycc.edu.
