For the fourth year in a row, GateWay Community College's Accounting students are participating in a tax internship through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program; putting their coursework to test and gaining experience through preparing and electronically filing income taxes for community members.
New this year, the students will be on-campus to provide tax preparation services to students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the community. Services will be available on Fridays from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, starting February 25 in room MA 2111, which is located in the Main Building. Services will be provided through March 25; except for March 18 when the campus is closed due to Spring Break.
As in previous years, students will also work off-campus at the Emmett McLoughlin Community Center, located at 1150 South 7th Avenue, Phoenix 85007. This site will be open on Tuesdays from 5:00pm - 8:00pm and Saturdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm, February 4 through April 12.
Normally staffed by volunteers, the internships are made possible through a partnership with the City of Phoenix Housing Department who holds a grant with the IRS to offer free tax preparation services. In order to qualify for the internship students must have taken an Income Tax Preparation (ACC121) course and received at least a B, earned three certifications including the VITA Advanced Preparer Certificate, as well as maintained regular attendance during the course of the class. Additionally, all interns and volunteers are certified annually through the IRS VITA program.
To date, 29 GateWay students have served as interns and have helped feed more than $1.5 million back into the local economy. Tax preparation services are available for those with an annual maximum income of $56,000 or receiving unemployment. Those wishing to receive tax preparation services at either location are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis and should bring their social security cards, individual tax identification cards, W-2 forms, document of all sources of income and deductible expenses, including college related expenses.
For more information about the Income Tax Preparation course, which is a required course for GateWay's Associate in Arts Accounting Degree, contact Annette Torrey at torrey@gatewaycc.edu.
