GateWay Community College is proud to announce the return of women's golf to its Spring 2010 athletic line up! The new women's golf coach, Paul Manoogian, has been working hard to make this a historical season for GateWay and is currently looking for his all-star lineup. Any woman currently enrolled or looking to take classes in the spring is encouraged to join. All skill levels are welcome and scholarships are available!
Women interested should be able to commit to practices and tournaments held primarily on weekdays in the spring. For more information, contact Manoogian at pamanoog@cox.net .
A unique evening golf tournament fundraiser at Continental Golf Course to support GateWay athletes
Grab your clubs and join GateWay Community College for a unique night of food and fun at one of Scottsdale’s finest courses! The first ever Scrambling for Scholarships event will be held Saturday, September 19 and will feature dinner, a silent auction and a 9-hole round of night golf. Each player will receive their own glow-in-the-dark ball and a chance to win great prizes! The event will begin with dinner at 7 p.m. at Continental Golf Course, located at 7920 E Osborn Rd in Scottsdale. Proceeds from the event will help raise money for GateWay athletes.
As the expense of a college education continues to rise, it is imperative that scholarships are available for student athletes to help provide for books, school supplies and sporting equipment.
“This is a great opportunity to support your Geckos while having a great time with friends and family,” said Jaime Long, GateWay’s acting athletic director. “We have over 140 student athletes, many of which have difficulties affording the high price of school supplies. Our fundraising efforts are working to build a book scholarship to benefit these athletes.”
The cost to register for Scrambling for Scholarships is $45 per person and up to four people per group are allowed. Additional support is encouraged and there are three levels of sponsorship with incentives such as tournament registration, t-shirts and recognition in the Gecko Newsletter.

The softball season began this past weekend as the ladies participated in the 2009 Great Western Shootout Tournament in Yuma. The Geckos were defeated by Golden West, 1-5, and Chandler-Gilbert 2-9 on Saturday, and Southern Idaho 14-2 on Sunday. The Geckos look to turn their streak around at their first home game against Phoenix CC February 10th at St. Agnes.
Coach Jaime Long said the returning sophomores played strong and the new freshman are great additions to the Gecko family. A big congrats goes out to Courtney Klassen for being named a top returning player in our district!

The Lady Geckos slide into the new year starting with the Great Western Shootout in Yuma. The 3-day event, which will host over a dozen teams representing premier community colleges across the country, will kick off Friday, January 30th, and continue on through Sunday, February 1st. The Geckos are scheduled to go up against Golden West College and Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday, then finishing up the tournament against AZ Western College and El Paso CC on Sunday.
Their first home game is scheduled for February 10 at 2PM at St. Agnes Catholic School in Phoenix.

Bowling at Brunswick is family fun at its best. There’s something for everyone – bowling, billiards, video games. It’s a great way to get out, cut loose and grab some smiles
The Bowling for Books Tournament was started in order to create a book scholarship fund for our student athletes. As the expenses of a college education continue to rise, it is imperative that we can create this scholarship opportunity for our student athletes. These contributions provide GateWay athletics immediate funds for student athletes and increase their opportunity for success, today and in the future. A college education not only gives our student athletes the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their chosen professions but also strengthens their ability to think analytically in order to contribute to our society. It is through athletic support that our pursuits of excellence can continue to grow and flourish. This is your opportunity to help us provide our athletes with a chance to excel on and off the field.
