On a very generous 5K course under the lights at Toka Sticks Golf Course in Gilbert, AZ the men and women of Gateway ran some solid times. The course quoted as a 5K (3.1 miles) seemed closer to a 2.95 mi course. Nonetheless, the Geckos ran some strong personal performances. Renato Romo, freshman, crossed the line first for Gateway in a time of 15:55. Close behind was captain, Paul Morales, with a time of 15:59. Nathan Ball (16:03), Christian Perez (16:05) and Kellen Bennett (16:16) rounded out the top 5 for Gateway this evening. Ryan Straight was the team's 6th runner to cross in 16:52. The men took 6th place out of 10 teams.
On the women's side Anita Fernandez and Kara Ipson ran some solid personal times with 20:59 and 21:06 respectively. Gateway women are still banged up and ill, so once again the Geckos didn't run a full women's team.
On a warm morning in Tucson, the men and women of Gateway ran the ACCAC Meet hosted by Pima CC. The men took 5th out of 7 teams, while the ladies took 6th out of 8 teams. Today was not one of the men's best team performances. With only Paul Morales breaking the 29 minute mark for the 8K (28:56) the Geckos put themselves way behind many of the top teams in the conference. Christian Perez crossed second for the Geckos in a 29:09, then TJ Mangione, Renato Romo, and Kellen Bennett rounding off the top 5 runners. There is much work to do until Regionals (Nov. 6th), which will determine if Gateway will go to Peoria, IL for NJCAA Nationals.
With Christina Kruse, the Geckos #1 runner, dropping out of the race due to a leg injury, the ladies of Gateway were forced to try to make up for the loss of their fastest harrier. Olivia Flores ended up crossing the line first for Gateway today with a 22:25 finish. She was followed by Denisse Miramontes (22:38), Anita Fernandez (22:48), Kira Benjamin (23:21), Kara Ipson (25:04), and Taylor Webb (26:46). Like the men, the women of Gateway have a lot of ground to make up before the region meet in early November in order for them to get a chance to compete at this year's national meet in Peoria, IL.
The men and women of Gateway traveled south to U of A to run in the Dave Murray Invite. The men ran a full team and ended up 7th out of 7 teams. A bit disappointing after a solid start in Irvine the previous week. Paul Morales led the Geckos with a finishing time of 24:47, followed by Renato Romo (25:02), Kellen Bennett (25:31), Nathan Ball (25:41), and Christian Perez (25:44). The course was a 4.25 mi race, a bit short of the standard 8K (nearly 5 mi) courses the men are use to.
On the women's side, two Lady Geckos ran. Christina Kruse, ran a solid 21:18 5K followed by Anita Fernandez who ran a strong 22:07. The ladies are battling injuries this season, so Coach Allison and Rodriguez chose not to run an entire women's squad this week.

From Coach david Allison:
"We ran at UC Irvine/Asics Invite this past weekend, September 12th and 13th, and had great results...
Although the standings don't show it both teams had a very strong showing. We went against many Division I and II NCAA schools and faired well. The women were lead by Christina Kruse with a strong showing of 21:01, while Kira Benjamin (team captain) ran a good 22:21 for the teams seconds spot. The other top 5 spots were filled by freshman Denisse Miramontes, Anita Fernandez, and Olivia Flores. The women will head south to Tucson on Friday for the Dave Murray Invite where they will face many of their regional foes.
The men's key word was bunching. The top five men only had a 26 second gap, and the top seven men had only a 56 second gap between them. With many freshman running their first 8K race, their times were very strong. Renato Romo lead the Geckos with a strong 28:44 finish, followed by other freshman Nathan Ball, and then captain, Paul Morales (sophomore) coming in third for Gateway. Chris Perez and TJ Mangione, both freshman rounded out the top 5. The men also travel down to Dave Murray Invite in Tucson on Friday, where they will clash head to head with many of their regional competition."
A unique evening golf tournament fundraiser at Continental Golf Course to support GateWay athletes
Grab your clubs and join GateWay Community College for a unique night of food and fun at one of Scottsdale’s finest courses! The first ever Scrambling for Scholarships event will be held Saturday, September 19 and will feature dinner, a silent auction and a 9-hole round of night golf. Each player will receive their own glow-in-the-dark ball and a chance to win great prizes! The event will begin with dinner at 7 p.m. at Continental Golf Course, located at 7920 E Osborn Rd in Scottsdale. Proceeds from the event will help raise money for GateWay athletes.
As the expense of a college education continues to rise, it is imperative that scholarships are available for student athletes to help provide for books, school supplies and sporting equipment.
“This is a great opportunity to support your Geckos while having a great time with friends and family,” said Jaime Long, GateWay’s acting athletic director. “We have over 140 student athletes, many of which have difficulties affording the high price of school supplies. Our fundraising efforts are working to build a book scholarship to benefit these athletes.”
The cost to register for Scrambling for Scholarships is $45 per person and up to four people per group are allowed. Additional support is encouraged and there are three levels of sponsorship with incentives such as tournament registration, t-shirts and recognition in the Gecko Newsletter.
Sign up today by visiting http://www.maricopa.edu/foundation/events/golf/. The deadline to register is Saturday, September 5.

The Bowling for Books Tournament was started in order to create a book scholarship fund for our student athletes. As the expenses of a college education continue to rise, it is imperative that we can create this scholarship opportunity for our student athletes. These contributions provide GateWay athletics immediate funds for student athletes and increase their opportunity for success, today and in the future. A college education not only gives our student athletes the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in their chosen professions but also strengthens their ability to think analytically in order to contribute to our society. It is through athletic support that our pursuits of excellence can continue to grow and flourish. This is your opportunity to help us provide our athletes with a chance to excel on and off the field.
